Rope climbing with TepacapActivity Holidays

If your family enjoys activities then why not plan your next holiday as an activity holiday.  There are a number of ways you can do this - you can "do it yourself", you can book direct with an activity holiday provider, or you can book through a company offering a full holiday service.  Country Kids offer a flexible package where you can pick and choose the activities you want to do and combine them with a few rest days, making an overall very satisfying and healthy holiday experience!  The Country Kids package includes luxurious accommodation, unlimited crèche for babies and toddlers (10 weeks up to 5 years), supervised on-site activities for older kids and parents, three great adventure activities such as canoeing, horse riding and mountain biking, two catered evenings, arrival shopping pack with local goodies ,  daily cleaner, two nights babysitting and a great petting farm for the little ones.

One of our all time greats holiday experiences with the family in France was a day spent at one of the Tepacap adventure parks (see above right) where you can swing through the trees like Tarzan, safely anchored to a safety harness.  This wouldn't make a full holiday, but if you want some activity whilst on holiday it will make a great day out, especially for teenagers and active dads!

Of course skiing is a popular activity holiday in the winter months, but even in the height of summer there are a few high level resorts such as Tignes, La Plagne, Val d’Isere or Val Thorens which are still able to offer skiing on glaciers.  See the France For Families skiing section for more advice on skiing.

PGL offer a few organised family activity holidays - for more information check their website here.

Walking  With two major mountain ranges - the Alps and the Pyrenees, there is some fantastic walking country in France.  You can take local routes or follow some of the major long distance walking routes. Cycling  If you're a rough neck then you should try an organised cycling holiday in the mountains.  But there are plenty of practical choices for families in Brittany and Normandy where you can cycle from a centre. Sailing  With so much coastline it is only natural that France should be famous as a sailing destination.  There are a number of resorts and companies offering dedicated sailing holidays.  There are also many local lakes with sailing facilities.

Sailing in Brittany

This is a great idea for an activity holiday - combine a week's holiday sailing with a week relaxing in one of Sailing in Brittany's gites.  Sailing in Brittany offer five-day RYA practical courses. Their aim is for you to enjoy yourselves, whilst learning the necessary skills to run a yacht safely as you cruise along the fantastic Breton coast and Islands. They have two delightful gites - DRIFTWOOD (6) & PEBBLES (3), set in the countryside on the breathtaking Crozon Peninsular, only a couple of miles from some beautiful beaches and magnificent coastal scenery. They also own TAMARISK (8), their four bedroom large family house situated in lovely Camaret-Sur-Mer with all the amenities including waterside cafes, restaurants and shops.

Be Prepared!

When planning your activity holiday, think carefully about the capabilities of your party.  For example, there is no way you will cycle with a young family to the top of the Col d'Aspin in the Pyrénées.  And you should never try white water rafting without experienced supervision.

You should also make careful preparations in what you take - appropriate clothing, equipment in some cases, food, water bottles etc..
