Summer toboggan run in the AlpsAlps Attractions  If your family likes the great outdoors then you are assured a fantastic holiday in the Alps.  It's not really the sort of place to go to if you need to be entertained, but if you are used to entertaining yourself and to having lots of exercise, then you will have a delightful time here.  We have dedicated sections on walking and cycling, as well as some lovely Alpine towns.  But here are a few other attractions worthy of mention, some of which offer different kinds of activity!

Monastère de la Grande Chartreuse and La Correrie Museum

Location: The Monastery and museum are situated about 30 kms N of Grenoble to the  NW of St. Pierre-de-la-Chartreuse (Michelin map 125 F4) up in the hills off the D520B.
Description: The Chartreuse Monastery was founded over 920 years ago in 1084 and nowadays is known around the world on account of its famous liqueur.  Today however the Monastery, nestled in a beautiful alpine site, is home to a silent order of monks and cannot be visited. However there is a museum nearby at La Correrie (38380 St. Pierre de Chartreuse Tel No (04) 76 88 60 45) to the south of the Monastery where the day to day routine of a monk is faithfully depicted using audio-visuals, film and photographs. This is open every day from April-October (no lunch-time closure from June to September).  Also open 10th Feb - 11th March so you can see the site in the snow!   Website.  A visit to the museum can be followed by a walk through the woods to the Monastery  - about an hour round trip.
Our recommendations: To make a full day out in the area, visit the nearby Caves de la Chartreuse.
