Typical Brittany TownBrittany Towns  Brittany must surely be characterised by its quaint seaside towns and fishing villages which are credit enough to the area, but more than this, it is blessed with such fantastic jewels as St Malo with its splendid walled old town; Lorient with it's fishing port, beach and Celtic music festival; and Rennes, the regions capital with its huge Saturday market.  St Malo is our personal favourite.

Central RennesRennes:

Location: In the extreme east of Brittany, about 75km south of St Malo via the N137 dual carriageway.

General Info: Official Rennes Website.  Useful English website.

Description: Rennes is the regional capital of Brittany.  It has a very pleasant old quarter where you will find a massive Saturday market which is claimed to be one of the largest in France.

Our recommendations: For adults, the Musée des Beaux Arts (housed in the former university) has some excellent art galleries.  The Musée de Bretagne is housed in the same building.  The Jardin du Thabor in the Rue du Paris is impressive.

For the children: Sadly the market disappointed our family.....we've never seen so much choice of fish, fruit and veg.....but not a single novelty stall in sight where the children usually have fun spending their holiday allowance!  They'll have a lot more fun in towns like Vitré or Fougères.
