Typical Brittany TownBrittany Towns  Brittany must surely be characterised by its quaint seaside towns and fishing villages which are credit enough to the area, but more than this, it is blessed with such fantastic jewels as St Malo with its splendid walled old town; Lorient with it's fishing port, beach and Celtic music festival; and Rennes, the regions capital with its huge Saturday market.  St Malo is our personal favourite.

On the beach in St MaloSt Malo:

Location:
You'll find St Malo 70km north of Rennes on the N137.  Plenty of parking is available around the outside of the town walls although it does get busy in season.
General Info:

Description:
The outskirts aren’t so attractive; however, once you arrive in the old town you will be enchanted by the place.  The city walls were heavily bombed during WWII but they have been completely restored and you can walk all the way around the old town atop them.  Inside the walls there are a wide range of tourist shops to be browsed and restaurants to be savoured.

Our recommendation: The walk around the walls of St Malo's old town will take around an hour depending on how often you stop to see the views (and there are plenty!).

For the children: Take a rucksack with some things for the beach as there are some lovely beaches you can access on the north side.  The aquarium is worth a visit and offers a touch and feel area for the brave!
