Dordogne Towns  There is a rich diversity of towns and villages in the Dordogne with splendid villages perchés and bastide towns such as Domme, delightful riverside villages such as Limeuil and cultural centres such as Sarlat.  But the best must be the spectacular villages built around cliffside troglodyte dwellings such as Rocamadour or La Roque Gageac.  No visit to the Dordogne can be complete without spending at least some time in a street café in one or other of these.

Description: This beautiful old town oozes atmosphere and style with a great location on the confluence of the Dordogne / Vézère rivers (below left).  It rightly deserves its place amongst
Les Plus Beaux Villages de France.  There is a nice (but steep) walk to the top of the old town where there are formal gardens (free to children).
Our recommendations:  It is worth a visit to Limeuil (pictured above) for the scenery and setting alone although it is a bit light on entertainment, except by the river….and there are The confluence of the Dordogne and Vezère rivers from Limeuilbetter river side attractions elsewhere.  So we suggest you pop there when you have an hour or two to kill, but don't plan to spend a whole day there.
For the children: There is canoeing from the river bank although we would recommend other places for a canoeing trip - when we visited the water was very low at the end of a long dry summer and the river didn't seem to be so clean here.
