Driving tour of Cathar Castles and the Gorge de Galamus
Description: This tour takes you
past the dramatically situated Châteaux of Quéribus and Peyrepertuse, as
well as a trip through the deep ravines of the Gorge de Galamus.
There are several options for picnic lunches or dining out along the way.
Although probably only about an hour of driving, if you spend time at the
attractions along the way, this makes a delightful day out for all the
family.
Directions:
Take the D117 west from Perpignan for about 20km as far as Maury where you
turn north on the D19. Look out for the great views of the
Château de Quéribus as you climb towards the Grau de Maury (see
left). Turn right here and head up to the car park below the château.
Take a break here and spend an hour visiting this dramatically situated
château.
Return down to the Grau de Maury, then head down the hill towards Cucugnan
and on along the D14 to Duilhac-sous-Peyrepertuse. We recommend that
you stop here
for lunch or a drink at the
Auberge de la Source. If you want to visit the
Château de Peyrepertuse (pictured right) you will need to retrace your
steps slightly and turn up the steep hill to the château (signposted).
The
next part of the journey continues along the D14 along a delightful valley
until you reach Cubières-sur-Cinoble where you turn left onto the D7
through the Gorge de Galamus. The road is very windy with many rocky
overhangs and the odd tunnel (see left) and it can be difficult to
negotiate in places. Because of the narrowness of the road, there is
a traffic light controlled system between the hours of 13.00 and 19.00 in
peak season. Delays can be expected here. Park on the south side of the
Gorge to visit the Ermitage St Antoine-de-Galamus (20 mins walk) and for
great views of the river below. There is a free navette service from the
car park in peak season.
After visiting
the gorge, continue on the D7 south to rejoin the D117 at St Paul-de-Fenouillet. |
