Base de Loisirs in Lot-et-GaronneLot-et-Garonne & Tarn Attractions  - spread over a wide area and perhaps overshadowed by its more famous neighbour (the Dordogne), however the region still has plenty to interest you during your holiday, with enchanting towns and villages, spectacular rivers, chateaux, caves and more besides.  Also, although a long way from the sea, there are no shortage of swimming lakes (Base de Loisirs) where you can cool down in those hot summer months.

Oak Barrels at the Chateau de CassaigneChâteau de Cassaigne
Location:  Can be found in the village of Cassaigne, 7kms SW of Condom on D208 (off main D931).
General Information: Armagnac tasting.  Website.
Description: The magnificent Château de Cassaigne is surrounded by more than 30 hectares of vineyards from which Armagnac is produced –at the expense of upsetting any purists Armagnac is similar to brandy, many say it is better! Why not solve the debate and try some for yourself? The visit to the Chateau is free and with the help of a written guide it is possible to visit the vaulted kitchens, associated rooms, a cellar and watch a video (in English) about the estate. Tastings are also free, ranging from Floc de Gascogne (local aperitif), Armagnac itself and prunes soaked in Armagnac.  More info from our Specialist Wines section.
Our recommendations: Definitely a visit for adults, perhaps slotted in after the children have had their fun. However there are artefacts etc. that may interest the children and the grounds are ideal for running around in, leaving the adults to more ‘grown-up’ pursuits!

Tour of some Bastides:

South West France is full of bastides – fortified villages/towns and the area around Condom is a good starting point to visit a selection of these. Sitting in a car touring quaint villages may not enthral the children but careful planning with perhaps the promise of an ice-cream (or other treat) may keep everyone happy, as we discovered on a recent trip.

Of all the bastides, perhaps the most interesting is Larressingle to the west of Condom  -  the smallest enclosed bastide in France. It is in fact a moated circular fort, complete with towers and a keep and inside the walls are a selection of shops selling local arts and crafts, as well as a small museum and a ‘crêperie’. Outside the walls children may be interested in visiting the hands on outdoor museum devoted to medieval weaponry.

Other bastides are Le Romieu (NE of Condom), where local folklore remembers the ‘Cat Woman’. Get the children to see how many cat statues they can find in the village. Also worth visiting is Fourcès (12 km NW of Condom), and Lectoure, which could be combined with a visit to the tannery at Bleu de Lectoure.
