Best Attractions in the Massif Central  The Massif Central is best explored by those who love the great outdoors with excellent walking in the summer months and the closest skiing to Paris in the winter months.  All the major attractions in the area take advantage of the geology of the area, for example with many canoeing centres, underground caves to explore and centres such as Vulcania which are built around the theme of the volcanic past of the region.

Roquefort-sur-Soulzon – caves of Roquefort Société

Location: Off the beaten track, east of D999 halfway between St Affrique and Millau on the minor road D23.
General Info: www.roquefort-societe.com. Open all year (without interruption in July/August). Adults €3, Under 16’s are free.
Description: This village is home of one of France’s most well known delicacies. Here, that intricate balance between man and nature produces the blue veined cheese known as Roquefort. There are several cheesemakers to visit but we would recommend the tour organized in the caves of the largest producer -  Société. Unfortunately the tour is in French but there is plenty to see (and smell!) with a tasting at the end.
Our recommendations: The temperature in the caves is 10 degrees, so make sure you take something warm to wear.
For the children: We must admit that we did this tour pre children and imagine this would not be their preferred way of spending 1½ hours.
