Canoeing on the Tarn
The Gorge du Tarn is an area of
unsurpassed beauty that strongly merits exploring. This can be done by
car or on foot, but by far and away the best way to experience the gorge
is on the water. You can do this on an organized boat trip - an option
best suited to families with very young children or children who are
unable to swim. Alternatively you can hire a canoe for trips of anything
from an hour to several days. Most people opt for either a half or full
day. Nothing can really compare to the thrill of canoeing the gorges,
which allows you to enjoy them at your own pace, stopping where and when
you like for a swim, to sunbathe, eat a picnic or simply soak in the
amazing scenery. This was our first canoeing experience in France 20
years ago and is one we will never forget.
Some sections are easier than others so be aware of
your capabilities before setting out – seek advice from the canoe
companies. An indicator of the fact that this river is perhaps more
challenging than others in France is that as well as companies providing
watertight canisters for personal belongings they also offer helmets
(especially for children). |
