Lac Pavin in the Parc Regional des Volcans d'AuvergneBest Attractions in the Massif Central  The Massif Central is best explored by those who love the great outdoors with excellent walking in the summer months and the closest skiing to Paris in the winter months.  All the major attractions in the area take advantage of the geology of the area, for example with many canoeing centres, underground caves to explore and centres such as Vulcania which are built around the theme of the volcanic past of the region.

Canoeing on the Tarn

The Gorge du Tarn is an area of unsurpassed beauty that strongly merits exploring. This can be done by car or on foot, but by far and away the best way to experience the gorge is on the water. You can do this on an organized boat trip - an option best suited to families with very young children or children who are unable to swim. Alternatively you can hire a canoe for trips of anything from an hour to several days. Most people opt for either a half or full day. Nothing can really compare to the thrill of canoeing the gorges, which allows you to enjoy them at your own pace, stopping where and when you like for a swim, to sunbathe, eat a picnic or simply soak in the amazing scenery. This was our first canoeing experience in France 20 years ago and is one we will never forget.

Some sections are easier than others so be aware of your capabilities before setting out – seek advice from the canoe companies. An indicator of the fact that this river is perhaps more challenging than others in France is that as well as companies providing watertight canisters for personal belongings they also offer helmets (especially for children).

Our favourite attractions in the Massif Central:

     - Aven Armand caves
     - Chaos de Monpellier-le-Vieux
     - Mont-Dore Aventures
     - Parc Ecureuil

Something the children will love - try canoeing in the Tarn.
