Nord Pas de Calais Attractions  This area of France gets rushed past by hordes heading south, but has some gems that can be enjoyed both  for a holiday close to home, as well as day trips to experience French culture rather than having a booze cruise!  Plan a day trip well and there will be time not only to stock up on wine and spirits, but also to visit a local attraction such as Nausicaa or La Coupole and then top the day off with a meal in a French restaurant!

Cité Souterraine de Naours

Location: At Naours, 10km north of Amiens via the N25, taking the D60 from Taimas to Naours.  The entrance to the grottes is on the rue des Carrières.
General Info: Website.  Entrance price is €10 for an adult, €8 for a child between 4 and 12 years old.  From 1st February to 15th November the grottes are open for a few hours each morning and afternoon.  From April to end August it is open from 9AM to 6.30PM.
Description: This underground city is absolutely incredible – 33m below ground level it covers more than 2km with 300 rooms and 28 galleries.
Our recommendations:  Take some warm clothing – in common with most caves it will be cold underground, even on a hot summer’s day.  Plan to take a picnic with you to eat in the park at the end of your visit.
For the children:  Whilst fascinating, this place is probably more likely to capture the imagination of older children.  There is a land train, mini golf, a children's play area (including a large bouncy castle) a couple of windmills and a water mill to visit.  Make it a half day visit and you should be able to keep them interested!
